Searching for Sugar Man is one of my favorite documentaries — the story of Rodriguez, a promising singer/songwriter whose career in the early 70’s was a failure in America. Unbeknown to him, his music made its way to South Africa, where he became the biggest selling artist in the country, only finding out years later.

What does any of that have to do with this motorcycle, Eleanor?

This project was me stretching my skills as far as I could go, my best effort and work. I wanted to make a tribute bike to the Eleanor Mustang — one of the most iconic and different cars around. I’m proud of the work, but it met a cold reception. My point: doing work you love is risky, you may find that no one feels it, gets or loves it like you do.

C’mon, I’m by no means equating bikes with some profound meaning. But then, I Wonder if Rodriguez could have imagined the impact putting his all into those songs would have on millions of South African people. There’s power in being earnest and passionate, in doing what we love. You never know what it will spark.
